HOW TO BRING YOUR DOG OR CAT TO BRAZIL An Import Permit is not necessary for dogs and cats (any other pets must have an Import Permit issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply), however when you arrive in Brazil you must present an International Veterinary Certificate/Pet Passport issued or endorsed by an Official Veterinarian from the country?s Veterinary Authority. Veterinary Certificates/Pet Passaports signed only by a private veterinarian are not accepted. Official Pet Passports are accepted only from countries that reciprocally accept the Brazilian Pet Passport. At this moment, the European Pet Passport is not valid to enter Brazil. A pet microchip is not required to enter Brazil. The International Veterinary Certificate/Pet Passport must comply with the Brazilian sanitary requirements: - Animals 90 (ninety) days older must have a rabies vaccination approved by the Veterinary Authority; - If it is the first vaccination, the trip must occur only 21 days after the shot; - Animals younger than three months old can only enter Brazil without the rabies vaccination when: o The Veterinary Authority certifies that the animal was less than ninety (90) days old at the time of the issuance of the International Veterinary Certificate and have not been in any property where there has been reported cases of urban rabies in the last ninety (90) days, based on the owner?s statement or by official epidemiological information. - If the country is considered rabies free by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), there is no need to present a proof of rabies vaccination. This information should be specified on the International Veterinary Certificate/Pet Passport. - The animal must be submitted within fifteen (15) days prior to the issue date of the International Veterinary Certificate/Pet Passport to a broad-spectrum treatment against internal and external parasites with products authorized by the Veterinary Authority, identifying the active ingredients. - The animal must be examined within ten (10) days prior to the date of issue of the International Veterinary Certificate/Pet Passport showing no clinical signs of infectious or parasitic diseases and is fit for transport. - Brazil might not accept animals previously diagnosed with leishmaniosis. The International Veterinary Certificate/Pet Passport is valid for 60 days from the date of issuance, as long as the rabies vaccination stills valid. Animals can return to Brazil with the Brazilian Pet Passport only if the requirements above are fulfilled and signed by an official veterinarian from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply.
